Empire Total War - Tipps zur Demo
Hier sind einige Tipps zur Demo.

Groups

Grouping ships or units is very useful in Empire, and groups work different in naval and land battles.

Naval battles - at sea when you group units they will try to maintain relative positions an also follow the lead ship around. So if you group your ships in a line they will then move in a line around the map enabling you to more easily control large number of ships. Also using alt + giving attack orders will have your ships in a group prioritise firing on the target ship and not break out of the group formation like a normal attack order.

Land battles - when you group units the group remembers the relative position of each unit so when you give a move order to a group they will end up in the same relative positions as when you grouped them. This, in combination with the new rotate/move buttons on the HUD allow you to quickly and easily move groups around, and even to break off parts of a formation into a new group.

Timing Volleys

You can time when your infantry fires in land battles. Simply turn fire at will off, units will reload even with it off as long as enemies are not too close, and then click fire at will back on and your unit will fire at any enemies in front of them.

Camera Changes

I've seen several people asking what happened to double right click zoom-to camera functionality, this has now moved to double mouse wheel click.

What is the best way to use grapeshot?

Best way to use it is once the enemy has taken some hull damage otherwise yes it will do very little. Once you've damaged their hold a bit grapeshot can be devestating up close.

What are the benefits of raking fire as opposed to firing at the other ships sides?

The stern is the weakest part of the ship, you can doa lot of damage to a ship hitting it in the stern.

Giving you a taste of the epic engagements that you'll be experiencing from 3rd March, the demo will take you through the basics of land and naval command and then unleash you in two historical battles!

You will get to play as the mighty British Empire as they do battle against the Americans in the 'Battle of Brandywine Creek' and then take on the French Navy in the 'Battle of Lagos'...

Battle of Brandywine Creek

After landing from his transport ships on the American coast, Major-General Sir William Howe led the British troops eastwards, with the intention of capturing Philadelphia.

In preparation, American General George Washington readied most of his units to defend from this frontal assault around the narrow crossing of Chad's Ford on the Brandywine. The Creek flows through the countryside of Pennsylvania, enveloped by sheer cliffs and heavily wooded hills on both sides. Safe in the knowledge the fast flowing creek could not easily be crossed; Washington was confident of holding his position.

However, more detailed surveillance of the terrain would suggest that alternative routes could turn the battle in the favour of the British.

Battle of Lagos

As so often in 18th Century warfare, French plans to invade England during the Seven Years War were reliant on ships from the naval base at Toulouse joining ships from Brest. The British had both ports blockaded, and the French had to wait for one of the blockading fleets to withdraw for re-supply before attempting any rendezvous.

The opportunity came when the British fleet under Admiral Boscawen at Toulon withdrew to Gibraltar. The French under Jean-François de la Clue-Sabran left Toulon, and began to make their way towards Brest. Passing the Straits of Gibraltar, the French were spotted by Boscawen's lookout ships.

Giving chase, Boscawen's fleet was only slightly larger than the French force, and caught up with them off the coast of Portugal where battle was joined. Take control of the British and defeat the French to end the invasion threat to Britain.

We hope that you enjoy playing our demo, which will give you a small taste of Empire: Total War action in preparation to leading your own empire to victory in March!

Maratha

The Maratha Empire or Confederacy was born in violence, as the result of the successful overthrow of Mughal rule less than a generation ago. Raja (king) Shivaji managed to gain control of the Pune region, and from then Mughal power was no longer invincible. As might be expected, the Mughals and the Marathas still nurse a dislike for each other.
Unlike the foreign (in origin) Mughals, the Maratha rulers are Indian princes and kings. They know the value of the Indian way of doing things, of the age-old strength of their lands. Their armies may look old fashioned, possibly quaint, to foreign eyes but that makes them no less effective. The empire exists solely because it has the military strength to withstand the Mughal threat.

Perhaps now, though, it is time to think of expansion. It may no longer be enough to hold off the Mughals; perhaps they should be driven from India altogether, and a new empire with Indian rulers established. Perhaps only Indians truly have the ability to withstand the Europeans who are starting to demand much of India. For now, the Europeans want only money and trade, but soon they will be after concessions, a little piece of land here, another piece there, until all is ruled by foreigners from across the sea. Unless a strong hand guides India, it is possible that the rule of Mughal outsiders will be replaced by the lordship of European outsiders.

And perhaps, one day, a Maratha could demand concessions from a European, in his lands…

Empire: Total War - Die Fraktionen und ihre Stärken
Quelle/ or Source (for foreigners, so that nobody thinks we are stealing information) Skaboots genialer Post von http://shoguntotalwar.yuku.com/topic/39476

France: Strength- France should have no problems with money because of its location between many nations and the many cities and ports along it's coastlines. It's army though good would have to be the main power of France because of Britain and her navy but if they spend a good time they can overcome Britain's navy . . Also the largest army in Europe.
Weakness- Navy would not have good chance agaisnt power of Britain, and with far colonies in North America across the Atlantic, Frances colonies could face ruin and possibly France herself. Though much of her income will go to the army plus the chance of population revolt can weaken France.

Great Britain: Strength- Power in Navy means power all over the 7 seas, with colonies all over the world Great Britain's navy can ensure their safety. The greatest trade nation. Plus all the money they would get from these colonies would increase their treasury for more ships. Good position on map prevents invasion only accessible by sea.
Weakness- The larger the Empire the bigger the beast it becomes, the harder it is to tame. Wars with neighbors, revolts and rebellions within your Empire can mean disaster and ruin. Make sure the people are happy and they will make you happy in return.

Russia: Strength- Perhaps one of the largest armies in Europe (besides France), they are rising to become the most powerful nation in the world. The location can mean 1 front wars and its vast territory offers many resources and wealth. It's army is huge and it's size can cause fear in any enemy, but the army is poorly trained and equipped. After reforming they can seem unstoppable. Good wealth from population due to large agricultural society.
Weakness- Russia will need to act fast to catch up with the rest of the world. They will be most vulnerable at the beginning, though with a large army, not the best one. Quick reforming of it's army and navy is a must if Russia wishes to succeed. But once they do, other nations need to think twice before they mess with them.

Prussia: Strength- Excellent trained army, especially in line infantry. Good trade with Sweden, Denmark and Russia. If they keep good relations that is. It's infantry would be the power of her army.
Weakness- Multiple front war, though a good army, its small territory can mean it can be overrun very quickly if they are not careful. They would have to be careful splitting up armies to fight at different locations of their Empire.

Spain: Strength- Many colonies in North and South America is where most of their income would come from. A good position in Europe makes them only have 2 fronts to worry about with France and Portugal.
Weakness- A declining power. like Great Britain they would need their power in their navy to keep their colonies in the New World. Their armies are mediocre but would have a rough time with those of France. They have to get back up on their feet if they wish to remain the power they once were.

Ottoman Empire: Strength- Vast territories throughout Asia Minor and the Middle-East means plenty of wealth to supply the army. Very good janissaries and sipahi's to defend the Empire and a lot of water (Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, Red Sea) to do trading.
Weakness- Constant war with the Russians, Austrians and Polish can drain the treasury. Untrusted by the west, alliances would be something hard to get (expect France). Western navies would give the Ottoman's a problem so having a colonial Empire in distance lands can be almost impossible. Even though they have good janissaries and sipahi's, they are weak in other fields of the army.

Sweden: Strength- Baltic Sea for trade. A very good army to stand out against much of Europe. Good position on map means a minimum front war and with mostly coastline means that a navy is required to invade Sweden (expect Denmark and Russia).
Weakness- Main rival will be Russia, so Sweden will need to act fast before Russia gets too powerful. Navy is required to defend her country, which is matched by Denmark. Sweden must also prevent Prussia from sending troops across the sea to their country or they could face ruin. Their economy is the greatest weakness, but if they learn to muster their economy they can be the greatest power in the north.

Thirteen-Colonies: Strength- Good trading across the Atlantic with friendly factions. Good public order within it's town and cities means better planning on revolutionizing and war. Plus alliances with European nations against Great Britain can help them gain their independence.
Weakness- Not at all a power, lack in troops and equipment could mean failure in their plan for independence. Would depend heavily upon other nations for help. Guerrilla tactics would also be needed against the British Redcoats.

Austria: Strength- Cities with good tax income from the population and good wealth from rural areas. Good relations with some of it's western Europe means less wars. Moderate army to defend herself. Most income will go to economy and not all military.
Weakness- Landlocked means it must focus on land trade (roads, markets etc). No navy at all (though they don't need one). Even though it has good relations with the west they can face constant war with the Ottomans, who has a matched army to theirs. Alliances would be a good idea for the Austrians.

Poland-Lithuania: Strength- If they keep good relations with surrounding neighbors, they can get an excellent income. Moderate taxes from population. Very good horsemen.
Weakness- Limited navy and compared to other European nations not the best army. Poland cannot stand alone so alliances will be necessary. (probably the hardest faction to play with)

Holland: Strength- Second best trading nation with excellent navy and sea trade. Very wealthy cities so good taxation from population. Income will go to improving naval trade and warfare.
Weakness- Vulnerable to France and her army with their smaller army to stand agaisnt them. Also vulnerable to German states. Alliance with Great Britain can greatly increase the power of Holland.Though if both Great Britain and France are at war with Holland, they can face disaster.

Portugal: Strength- Also one of the best navies in Europe, much of their wealth like Spain comes from their colonies in the America's, also some of their comes from India. It's small territory means it should be easy to handle. Excellent sea trade along the entire Iberian Peninsula. One front wars.
Weakness- Main rival would be Spain, who's army is superior to the Portuguese. Like Prussia with small territory and population can be overrun quickly. Portugal might depend heavily on the riches of South America to survive against the strong but declining Spanish.

Denmark: Strength- Good location with trade in Baltic and North Sea. Minimum front wars. Good navy to stand against Sweden. If Sweden is taken over Danish power can greatly rise.
Weakness- Their army compared to Sweden is unmatched, their power agaisnt Sweden would have to be in their navy. Good relations with Prussia would be wise to stand agaisnt other northern powers.

Mughals: Strength- Unique army with war elephants and rocket artillery. One of the wealthiest states in the world in terms of the size of the starting treasury Potential to expand and hold on to their power to become a true superpower rivaling that of Europe.
Weakness: Internal strife and sub-par military would require major reforms to be up to scratch with the more modern Europeans. (Mughals written by copperknickers)

The Iroquois Confederacy: Strength- Many other surrounding vassal tribes. Vied for as an allie by both the British & the French. Experienced & well equiped warparties.
Weakness- Positioned right in the middle of the colonial British & French. The French Algonquin allies are stronger than ever & poised right at the door. Relatively small "citizen" population. The "lower class" is made up of conquored tribes.

The Cherokee: Strength- Nestled in the mountains of North Carolina. They serve as a protection from most attacks as well as a barrier to desease. This has allowed them to miss recent epidemics and allowed for a larger population which means more warriors.
Weakness-Their nuetrallity has made them only enemies, the largest & strongest tribal entities are thier enemies sending steady streams of warparties. They come from all directions but the east.

The Sioux: Strength- They have adapted the horse well. They have excellent horse archer units that should reck havoc on any infantry.
Weakness- Their location makes thier access to firearms limited this should increase as European traders connect trade routes. The Algonquint tribes such as the Ojibwe are strong enemies that look to sever thier ties with European traders and thus firearms.
(The Iroquois Confederacy, The Cherokee and The Sioux written by nIshnabe)

Venice: Strength- One of the strongest navies in the Mediterranean, excellent sea trade and wealthy cities for a steady income. Good relations with Austria can increase military might against the Ottoman's. Alps to the north to defend from German invasion.
Weakness- Like many other nations Venice should keep good relation with close neighbors to focus on war with distant ones (like the Ottoman Empire). Failure in this can mean failure in their ambitions for the sea and hope of having different colonies in the Mediterranean. Venice's hope of having true power in Europe is in the Mediterranean and it's prosperous cities and coastlines (colonies).

Swiss Confederacy: Strength- Location between Alps make an ideal position to defend agaisnt neighbors. Good array of units, mostly consisting of melee. Known for keeping themselves out of wars.
Weakness- If they do get into wars, their neighbors army compared to them is fearful. Like other nations they should keep close relations with nearby neighbors and focus on distant ones. Also the Alps can slow down trade with other nations, so they need to focus and taxes.

Morocco: Strength- Good position on map with limited front wars (Especially with Spain). Sea trade with Portugal on Atlantic and the Mediterranean with other Nations. Good landscape ideal for farming.
Weakness- Faces invasion from Spain and the Ottoman Empire, who's armies are more superior to theirs. The Moroccans would have to use their landscape to their advantage, suppressing Spain to the north. The Ottomans would be harder to to keep back. May need alliances to stop Spain and the Ottomans from taking over Morocco.

Algiers: Strength- Recently separated from the Ottoman Empire. Good wealth from land farming trading on the Mediterranean. Armies unlike most of Europe but formidable. Good Navy.
Weakness- More likely a rebel faction due to it's piracy. The Algiers main source of wealth is from raiding and pirating. Neighboring armies can easily defeat Algerians in open battle fields. So frontier warfare would be necessary.

Sicily: Strength- One front wars due to it's location in Southern Italy. Formidable navy and army. War with the Papal States is most unlikely so Sicily can focus on colonizing the Mediterranean.
Weakness- Like Venice to become a power they would need colonies along the Mediterranean. Rivals can be Venice and the nations Sicily wishes to colonize in. Sicily should really focus in colonizing on area at a time instead of many at once. Papal States could go to war with Sicily, as well as other Italian States.

Khanate of Crimea: Strength- Good relations with Ottoman Empire to the south across Black Sea means access to trade with the Ottomans. Excellent horsemen. One front wars.
Weakness- Unfortunately there one front war is with Russia, who is superior in the military. Help from Ottoman Empire is defiantly needed to at least keep the Russians back until they can get more power. Also a vassal to the Ottomans whoever is an enemy to the Ottomans is an enemy of them. Also weak in foot infantry.

Duchy of Savoy: Strength- Good mix of Italian militia. Good relations with other Italian states. Alps to the east make good defense from Germans.
Weakness- Main enemy would be France who constantly attacks. Militia units are no match for the French. Barely enough water to do sea trading (almost nothing actually). Like many other small and weak nations alliances will be necessary particularly with other Italians and if their lucky France's main rival, Great Britain.

Republic of Genoa: Strength- Excellent naval trading in the Mediterranean, particularly the best in western part. Good position makes them only vulnerable to Savoy in the North and other Italian States in the east. Good navy.
Weakness- Will rival for Mediterranean supremacy with the rest of the Italians, so war with them can be expected. If France manages to defeat Savoy, Genoa will have a great power as their neighbor so very good relations with them is needed. Army is good compared to it's first neighbors, but as empires grow Genoa will need to watch out.

Courland: Strength- Baltic sea brings trading with nations, also good trading with neighbors. Good navy due to its Baltic position and good archers (cheap units).
Weakness- Unfortunately the age of archers is at an end and firearms are the new weapons. Surrounded by powerful neighbors Courland will need to focus on alliances with them and aid them in their wars to gain power.

Ukraine: Strength- Good location in between many nations can produce income, also located in "the bread basket of Europe" for excellent agricultural income. Good relations with the Cossack and the mercenaries can increase the power of the Ukraine army.
Weakness- Though they have army it is unprofessional compared to most of their neighbours. The Cossacks can also choose to side with the Russians, increasing the chance of the Ukraine's fall. They are most likely to be an emerging faction, so war with Russia is almost impossible to avoid. They should keep good relations with Russia's enemies to avoid downfall.

Saxony: Strength- Good army with good line infantry. Surrounded by many liked neighbours (if they keep the good relations). Good position to do land trade with Prussia and Austria. Good tax income and order from the small population.
Weakness- Good army to many other German states but inferior to Prussia and Austria, so good relations is needed with these 2 factions and if possible a pact between all 3. Lack of coastline suspends them from naval trading and having a navy. Their small population makes them have a small army, if expansion is in their mind they need to focus on conquering smaller neighbours first.

Knights of Saint John: Strength- Small territory and small population means excellent public order. Army consisting of a lot of good melee units and good ties with Great Britain, excellent but small naval trade due to being an island.
Weakness- Very small army cannot hold back agaisnt invaders, support from Great Britain is needed. The small size of the territory and population limits them from having a large army, expanding will be their greatest challenge, they would need to look for lightly defended settlements to expand.

Scotland: Strength- The dream of independence dwells in their heart and a musket in their hand make the Scottish brave and devoting warriors. To successfully revolt agaisnt their British overlords precise timing is needed, after all they are only a few hundred miles from the heart of the British Empire. They must find a time where the British will be weakest to ignite their rebellion. Support from the Scottish population is also greatly needed and to increase their chances even further, alliances with Ireland and Wales and the enemies of Great Britain.
Weakness- The British have been Scotland's overlords for centuries and much of the population of Scotland might have been assimilated to their rule, so support for the rebellion can be limited. Though a navy is not needed for the Scottish their power would have to be in their infantry which is not superior to those of the British Red Coats. If the Scottish choose a wrong time to rebel defeat is a certainty.

Bavaria: Strength- As other Germans lands, Bavaria has a good army with good line infantry. Bavaria is surrounded by many neighbours, but that don't mean it's a problem because other factions near them are some germans lands too. They have good relation with France (not sure about that however). Good public order due to the little population.
Weakness- Little population mean little army, and the other factions can try to conquer them, if they don't have good relations. They have no links to the sea, that mean they have not a such good trade. (Bavaria written by VoRgAn)

Papal States: Strength-Not the greatest military force in Europe, but has much influence on many Catholic states. So protection from Catholic neighbours can be guaranteed if under attack. Good devoting militia units to call upon if under attack. Weakness- Though the head of the Catholic Church many nations are now more nationalistic than religious. So orders and commands from the Pope to other Catholic nations can be ignored without consequence. Weak force so armies can overrun the Papal States quickly, though unlikely from other Catholic nations.
Ireland: Strength- Like the Scots, independence is wanted from Great Britain. In the same position as Scotland so alliances with Great Britain's enemies would be a good idea. if Ireland can produce a good enough navy they can delay the Brits from invading giving the Irish time to prepare the defense of their cities. Good order mainly because they are the rebels. Weakness- Failure in defending their seas, the British can send their armies to crush the rebellion. Though this fight can be won alone the chances can increase if they do get help. Inferior armies compared to Great Britain and Ireland being an island, blockades from the British will greatly reduce their treasury.
Marathas: Strength- A people united to drive out the Mughals. It's armies will be lightly armed but well experienced and trained. Powerful elephant cavalry to crush enemy infantry. They will also have excellent trading with the Europeans due to the many resources in India. Weakness- Elephants may have to be more dependent then the Maratha thought which is not only expensive but hard to handle. Marathas infantry will have trouble with the Europeans so again heavy cavalry will be needed. A vital point in the Marathas income will be from trade with western Europeans, so good relations and alliances will be a great idea.

*Note- The entire faction list of not confirmed so some factions listed above is not guaranteed of being in the game.

Note*- There was confusion that people thought this was a history report, it's not it is more related to the game (info taken from previous TW games) then real life. Sorry if you were confused. The list is more for gameplay then histoey

Facts on Empire: Total War - von http://shoguntotalwar.yuku.com/topic/38653
Quelle/Source: http://shoguntotalwar.yuku.com/topic/38653

Title: Empire: Total War.
Developer: The Creative Assembly.
Location: Horsham.
Publisher: Sega.
Release date: March 2009
Studio Director: Mike Simpson.

From Mike Simpson:
We're delighted to introduce true 3D naval combat, something that adds a totally new dimension to Total War™ games." commented Mike Simpson, Studio Director at The Creative Assembly and the father of the Total War™ franchise. "We're genuinely excited about what we're achieving with the naval battles and also by the scale of the improvements being made to the core of the game - the land battles and the campaign. This will undoubtedly be the biggest and best Total War™ game we've ever made."

Team: About 40 people are working on Empire of which a few newbies are introduced. Full work was actually started on the engine once Barbarian Invasion was released, but the development of the 3D engine has been going on for a bit longer then that.

Lead Designer: James Russell.
Senior Designer: Jamie Ferguson(C.I.F)
Designer: Jan van der Crabben (Thamis).
Designer: James Whitston.
Designer: Jack Lusted.

Designer/ Head Writer: Mike Brunton (MikeB).
Writer: Kate Watson

Battle Programmer: Ingimar Gudmunsson

PR and Online Manager: Mark O'Connell (SenseiTW)
Studio Communications Manager: Kieran Brigden (TWRehab)

Time Period: The game is set in the years 1700 to 1800, a turbulent age of gunpowder, revolution, discovery and Empire Building.

Victory conditions: the player's aim is to create the greatest Republic or Empire the world has known, spanning not just a continent but the world! Can you hold on to lands in the New World, or establish a rich trading empire in the Indies?

AI:
- Empire: Total War will boast a full re-write of the AI with a wider range of strategies and tactics, providing a formidable opponent on land, sea and on the campaign map.
- One of the quirks of the old engine was that the diplomacy and military AI were two separate routines, developed separately by two different programmers. Those systems fought each other. The military side would say 'we need to invade' while the diplomatic side will say 'well, I just made a treaty with them.' Getting them to work together was difficult. It meant the behaviour wasn't always consistent.' Throwing out those systems should fix the quirks, while allowing for new game mechanics.
- The campaign AI will now advise the tactical AI about how important a battle is. So if an enemy is fighting while retreating on the strategic map, they might tell the tactical AI to fight a delaying action, preserving as many of their troops as possible. If the battle takes place just adjacent to the enemy capital, the campaign AI will tell the tactical AI to go all out and fight to the very last man.

Campaign map:
- An all-new fully animated campaign map with all buildings and upgrades visible, upgrades are done by clicking on them on the Strategic Map.
- New improved systems for Trade, Diplomacy, Missions and Espionage in that Diplomats, Spies and Assassins will no longer be represented on the map.
- Instead of spies and assassins, we now have the 'rake', a presumably caddish bounder who'll ingratiate himself into your enemies' corridors of power. His abilities have yet to be confirmed, but we're guessing that it'll be something more deadly than guzzling all the Prussians' sherry and seducing a duchess. Spies have not definitely been cut, but the new campaign map is freer with its information: you won't have to physically have a man on the spot to know whether France has invaded Spain, for example."
- A refined and streamlined UI.
- Improved Advisors and tutorials.
- Queens are portrayed: According to Mike Brunton "But given that there's Queen Anne and Catherine the Great and Empress Marie-Therese, we'd be a bit remiss not to include proper queen-type queens, now wouldn't we?"
- New agents and diplomacy traits functions are also planned, but no details are known about that yet.
- Revolutions can happen, leading to the separation of countries. (As an example, a rebellion of the Scots was given).
- Enhanced auto management.
- The big change for the fans is the reinvention of army movement. "It's fair to say that the campaign map in Rome and Medieval was divided into army-sized tiles, "Each tile could hold one army. In Empire, there's no tiling system. The player will never see any type of tiling artefact - it's entirely freeform. It's like taking the squares off the chessboard."
- Slavery appears, but it's not something you can actively get involved in.
- Each nation will still have a capital.
- You can change the form of government between: absolute monarchy, constitutional monarchy, and Republic. This will directly influence how you can deal with revolts and how fast you develop new technologies. Other factions will treat you according to your form of government.
- Taxes can be set seperately for Upper and Lower classes.
- The event movies will be in aswell, as there are already some screenshots from them too.
- We are working hard to ensure that naval battles assume a greater significance on the campaign map as well and that fleets really project power rather than just being transport containers for armies.
- For the first time, we are actually having a technology tree that lets player's research pure technologies as well as construct and upgrade buildings. We have a host of different technologies that the player can choose to focus on. Some will give units new abilities on the battlefield, or allow your artillery to develop new types of ordnance. Some will improve ships' sailing and fighting performance, others will develop your economy and enable new buildings and infrastructure, and others will advance the educational level of your nation and speed up future research.
- Religion plays a role in the game, but it doesn't play such as central part as in the medieval era. Religion does have an impact on happiness levels, and conversion can still help bring a newly conquered region under your control.
- We've really beefed up the diplomacy side of the game, and tried hard to make the AI factions behave in a more human way and respond to the player's treatment of them. Religion does play a role in terms of factions' attitudes towards each other, and it can be harder to maintain a close friendship with a faction with a different religion.
- Become a founding father. Control the fate of the United States of America, from its revolution against the British to overcoming the challenges of a young independent nation. First, in addition to the grand campaign, the game will include a Road to Independence campaign that lets players take charge of America from the founding of Jamestown to the victory at Yorktown.

Continents:
- Europe
- North and Central America
- India

Historical figures:
- Peter The Great
- Malborough
- Charles XII of Sweden.
- Wellington.
- Napoleon (according to PC Gameplay).
- According to Mike Simpson, there's even a possibility to have Napoleon himself in your own ranks when around the end of the century you recruit an artillery unit in Corsica.

Nations:
Playable:
- Britain
- France
- Sweden
- United Provinces(Netherlands)
- United States

Confirmed:
- Russia
- Venice
- Spain
- Poland-Lithuania.
- Ottoman
- Prussia

Non-playable: approximatly 40.

Land Battles:
- Maximum of twenty units (according to James Russell in PC Gameplay).
- Real time battles will pose new challenges with the addition of cannon and musket, challenging players to master new formations and tactics as a result of the increasing role of gunpowder within warfare.
- Capturing and occupying key buildings around the map. They will automatically take up defensive positions and fire out of windows/doors. You'll need to be careful however, because artillery can destroy buildings.
- Using cover, such as behind walls.
- Earth walls can be constructed, units entrenched and the battlefield is fully destructible.
- Sound will be adjusted and improved so that the battlefields will become much more alive!
- On the battle map (both land and sea), the increase in visual quality and the number of men on the battlefield is incredible. The new engine has allowed huge improvements in graphics, terrain & vegetation, destructible buildings, as well as more advanced unit behaviour and abilities

Artillery:
- Heavy artillery in the form of cannons, mortar and early rocket launchers, with bouncing cannonballs who bounce differently depending on the surface they hit slicing through drifting gunsmoke to tear up lines of infantry.
- Cannons will seize up and explode.
- Well-organized batteries of cannons.
- We have artillery units, some of which can be limbered up and moved around the field at speed by teams of horses. You can develop all kinds of exotic ammo for them to fire.
- Artillery plays a much, much more significant role this time around, so you can expect to see lots of different cannons being fired from atop distant hills, or being limbered up and dragged across the battlefield by horse teams. The cannons can benefit from many new technologies and techniques, using canister shot to wither an enemy cavalry charge, or explosive shells to break holes in an enemy infantry square. You can even order artillery to fire on a fixed point on the map to discourage enemies from crossing a specific chokepoint or approaching a key objective. Artillery is also useful for taking out the new buildings that you're going to find on many of the battlefields.

Infantry:
- Bagpipes, drummers, flautists and trumpeters will fill the air with play out over the crack of musket fire, the boom of artillery and the thunderous charge of cavalry.
Explanation on flags by Cn Iulius Flamininus on 06/06/2008:
Not giving much away here. The answer is flags.
Interestingly that caused us a few problems though.

Like which flag do you use? As many of you know, flags changed over time (a lot sometimes) and some nations used more than one flag depending on who was in charge of the force and what part of the military it was being used for. We decided to go with, where possible, the most recognised flag for a nation at that that period of time in history.

Thus the French have a Bourbon flag at the start of the game and the British have a Union flag that is a little different to the modern flag. There were some issues with flags for nations that might change goverment type in the game, but didnt historicaly during the period. For example we know what the French republican/revolutionary flag was, but what about if the Ottoman empire should become a republic or have a revolution and as a result become a republic? In some cases we decided that the change would primarily involve just removing any "royal" symbology from the flag or no change. In other cases a new flag was created and in yet other instances we used a flag from a later period when a nation actualy did change government type.

- Generals will bark out orders to their regiments as the player orchestrates the battle utilizing formations, unit abilities and drills.
- Formations: Line to mass their fire, Square to defend against cavalry charges or spread out in loose formation to minimize damage from cannon fire are all excellent tactics that the player will have to keep in mind.
- There's more of an emphasis on fire in Empire, but that doesn't mean that shock isn't also a vital component of battle. (Most of your fire units will have a shock attack as well.)

Cavalry:
- We have dragoon units -- mounted men that you can order to dismount and fire and attack the enemy as infantry. Then you can order them to mount up again and chase across the field on horseback.

General:
- Weapons will jam and misfire.
- The field of conflict will become strewn with the bodies of wounded and dying men, lacerated and dismembered by pike, bayonet and shot.
- Draw armies out of the cities, removing the dominance of sieges. That's being done by making region improvements - structures such as barracks, mines and palaces - exist outside of the city, vulnerable to attack. Generals can no longer afford to hide behind their city walls in the event of an invasion. They must sally forth and chase the aggressor away.
- As in previous games weather will effect guns and bows (for those that might have them). It will also effect fatigue and movement.

Sea Battles:
- 3D naval combat
- Intuitively command vast fleets or single ships
- After pummelling your enemy with cannon fire, close in to grapple their ship and prepare to board taking control of your men as they fight hand to hand on the decks.
- Once a ship is conquered by bordering it, you add it to your navy, but, this doesn't mean you can deploy it straight away, you'll have to return to a harbor, recruit a crew, repair damage to the ship before you're able to put it into service.
- Movement of ships is identical to the way land armies are moved, you have several harbors in which you can construct ships and these are then one at a time moved on the campaign map.
- Realistic sailing model. (Different wind conditions, different light conditions, different weather conditions).
- There will be rigging. Stays, shrouds etc. (Exactly how detailed they will be will depend on performance).
- Cannon and musket fire.
- Boarding actions.
- A full and very detailed damage model . The cannonballs can knock down masts, damage the sails , riggings and hulls and they'll kill individual men. That obviously affects the manouvrability of your ships.
- Full range of weather effects to influence battles. These will play out on stunning, ultra-realistic seascapes, as cannons and muskets blaze away, cutting through the smoke and fog to splinter, pierce and shatter hulls, sails and masts, laying waste to crew members and sending them to Davy Jones' Locker.
- Ship-specific formations and admiral traits.
- Each ship takes up a single unit space.
- There will be reinforcements.
- You can capture ships, and that will be important.
- It will take a lot of money and time to build 1st rate ships of the line.
- Players can field fleets of up to 20 ships with each of about 100 men on board who will make sure there is utter chaos and explosions on board.
- Pirates are included.
- You'll have a variety of choices to make when engaging in naval combat. Your cannons can be directed to aim for the hull to sink an enemy, for the decks to clear the way for boarding action by your marines, or for the masts to reduce the enemy's speed and maneuverability.
- There will be various classes of vessel, which will essentially vary by maneuverability, speed, and firepower.
- Command your ships whether you want to aim at the sails or at the hull, or at the men on the decks. You can choose what ammunition to load (Three types).
- You'll see and feel it all: the wind in the sails, the choking atmosphere of the gun-deck as the crew frantically reload the cannons, the fights on deck... the man at the steering wheel, driving the boat. (we definatly need to read up on those nautical terms ).
- Sea blockades can be performed to cripple the economy of other nations.

Graphical:
- Brand new graphics engine and technology which will include:
- Seascapes rich with extraordinary water and weather effects that play a huge role in your eventual glorious success or ignominious defeat.
- New advanced landscape and flora systems, dynamic weather and new battle choreography and occupy-able and destructible battlefield buildings.
- New ballistics and physics model.
- There's also a global weather system and climate types.

Gameplay:
- The game won't start full tilt with access to every single feature. Players will have the chance to wade around in the shallow end of the pool for a while before having to contend with all the options the game has to offer.
- Even when the other options start opening up, the team has reduced many of the management hassles that are present in the series. Recruiting big armies in Medieval II or in Rome require you to issue individual production orders in a number of different provinces. Empire will allow you to build large armies simply by recruiting units at your general. He'll then translate that request into production orders in nearby provinces.
- Similarly, players of previous Total War games have had to balance each of their provinces individually to maximize tax output and minimize unrest. Now, the game makes use of a more comprehensive tool to manage things across your entire empire.
- Given the time period, managing unrest is going to be a relatively important concern. As your society advances, your citizens will demand more and more freedom, which can definitely put a crimp in your own policies. You can choose to liberate them and become a modern enlightened state, or you could hold on to your power a little longer by crushing your people under an oppressive regime. Where previous games saw peoples aligned by religious affiliation, Empire will tend to focus more on this concept of political freedom as a component of happiness.
- Colonial regions also tend to produce exotic commodities such as sugar and tobacco.

Multiplayer:
- A brand new multiplayer component will include player rankings, leagues and ladders and completely new gameplay modes.

Modding:
- Modding: we want to give the modders a push in the back by releasing some tools we also work with, with these tools you can as a designer make adjustments without having to harass the programmers, this make these tools ideal for modders. We're not certain yet whether will release these tools with the game itself or put them online after the release of the game.

Minimum and recommended specs: Minimum Specs
